    About the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) Fellowships Program

    The International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) Fellowships Program was organized to help promising young ophthalmologists from developing countries improve their practical skills and broaden their perspectives of ophthalmology. 

    Fellows are expected to bring the acquired knowledge and skills back to their home countries and take part in programs to preserve vision and prevent blindness.

    The ICO gratefully recognizes grants, gifts, and pledges to the ICO Fellowships Program. Support ICO Fellowships by contributing to the ICO, ICOFoundation, or the International Ophthalmological Fellowship Foundation (IOFF).  The IOFF was formed in Germany to support the fellowships.     The ICO would also like to thank those who donated to the 2016 World Ophthalmology Congress® Travel Grant program.  Eleven travel grants were distributed thanks to an initial gift from the David Pyott Foundation and contributions from Dr. Pinar Aydin, Dr. Akef El-Maghraby, Mr. William Felch, Jr., Dr. Kunle Hassan, Dr. Martine Jager, Dr. Bruce Spivey, and Prof. Hugh Taylor.

    Three-Month Fellowships (offered by the ICO and its supporters)

    These fellowships provide young ophthalmologists from developing countries with exposure to and training in several subspecialties in ophthalmology.  The program is intended to be flexible to meet the needs of different countries and individuals.  Approximately 60 Fellowships are awarded each year.

    The ICO Three-Month Fellowship is awarded twice a year, with application deadlines of March 31 and September 30.

    ICO Three-Month Fellowship for Diagnosis and Therapy of Retinoblastoma

    This ICO Three-Month Fellowship opportunity will be served at teaching institutes in India or in Iran.

    The program is part of the ICO Three-Month Fellowship Program and is structured with the same award amounts and deadlines, with the exception that candidates within the country of India or Iran may apply. Other ICO Fellowships do not allow candidates to apply for fellowships in their home countries.

    The ICO Three-Month Fellowship is awarded twice a year, with application deadlines of March 31 and September 30.

    ICO-ECF Six-Month Fellowships for Diagnosis and Therapy of Retinoblastoma

    A six-month training opportunity for Retinoblastoma is available for young ophthalmologists from developing countries who wish to get a deeper insight into the diagnosis and treatment of Retinoblastoma. The fellowship will be served at teaching institutions in Mexico, China, Jordan, India, and Iran.

    The Fellowship is offered by the ICO and the Eye Cancer Foundation (ECF).

    One-Year Fellowships

    ICO-Retina Research Foundation Helmerich Fellowships
    Support for one year of ophthalmology training in any subspecialty.  Fellowships are awarded to young ophthalmologists from developing countries who are committed to enhancing ophthalmic education and patient care in their home countries.  The fellowship honors Mr. W. H. Helmerich III and is sponsored by the Retina Research Foundation in cooperation with the ICOFoundation.

    Two ICO – Retina Research Foundation Helmerich Fellowships are awarded each year. The application deadline is September 30.

    This fellowship provides young ophthalmologists from developing countries with subspecialty training at a designated ICO Fellowship Training Center or other fellowship training program.

    LEVEL/ FIELD OF STUDY

    ICO Fellowships is designed to sponsor students from developing countries to pursue Three-Month Fellowships in Ophthalmology. Fellowships provide young ophthalmologists with exposure to and training in several subspecialties in ophthalmology.

    The ICO Three-Month Fellowship offers training in the following subspecialties: General Ophthalmology, Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, Uveitis, Glaucoma, Cornea & External Diseases, (no Refractive Surgery), Medical Retina, Vitreo-Retinal Surgery, Oculoplastics, Cataract Surgery, Ocular Oncology, Neuro-Ophthalmology, Ocular Pathology, and Community Eye Health.

    HOST NATIONALITY

    ICO Fellowships 2024 is hosted by the International Council of Ophthalmology and taken in Turkey, Italy, Spain, Austria, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Germany, the United States, and Australia. You can utilize these scholarship opportunities to solve most of your academics problems.

    Scholarship Benefits

    The fellowships will include S$6000 (maximum) to cover travel and living expenses for three months. The exact amount is subject to actual student-style living expenses in the host country.

    Scholarship Number

    Approximately 60 three-month fellowships are awarded each year. Fellowships are awarded for three months.

    Eligibility for Scholarship

    • Residency training must be completed before applying for the ICO Three-Month Fellowships.
    • The specialist exam in ophthalmology must be successfully passed.
    • The applicant must be under 40 years of age at the time of applying.
    • The applicant must return to the home country after the training, resume previous positions, and apply the knowledge gained during the fellowship.
    • The applicant must be reasonably fluent in the language of the fellowship training center.
    • Applicants who have passed the ICO Basic Science, the ICO Clinical Sciences, or the ICO Advanced Examinations for Ophthalmologists (www.icoexams.org) will receive special consideration.
    • Applicants from countries with ophthalmologic societies that are Members of the ICO will receive special consideration.

    Notification:

    For applications submitted by the September 30 deadline, the fellowship is awarded and notices sent out in January.

    Applicants must be under 40 years of age at the time of application and are expected to return to their home country upon completion of the fellowship.

    Steps to applying

    1. Select a Fellowship: After identifying your country, the ICO Fellowship(s) you are eligible for will be shown.
    2. Complete Eligibility Check: You will be asked to provide information in order to determine if you are eligible to receive the selected ICO Fellowship.
    3. ICO Eligibility Review: After your information is submitted to the ICO your eligibility will be determined. You will be notified of the decision and asked to complete the application or informed that you are not eligible.
    4. Apply to a Host Training Center: If you are eligible, you will select and apply to a host. Please note that you may only apply to one host at a time.
    5. Host Application Review: Your request will be reviewed by the host you have selected. If accepted, you will need to confirm the details agreed upon between you and the host. If your request is declined, you will need to select another host.
    6. Fellowship Application Submitted: You will be notified that your application is complete and will be reviewed by the appropriate ICO Fellowship Committee.
