What is a Bursary and How Does it Work?

A Bursary is a sum of money given to students to study at university or college. Government, organizations, and sometimes universities offer bursaries to students to study at a university.

The bursary covers the cost of full tuition fees. Sometimes, the bursary will also cover additional costs involved in studying such as textbooks, laptops, living allowance for meals, and accommodation.

Often, the organization providing the bursary demands that the student (bursar) completes a training program or work for them after their studies.

This is a tremendous benefit for both the organization and the bursar, as the organization gets a well-trained staff, and the bursar gains employment after completing their studies.

Who is Eligible to Apply for a Bursary in South Africa?

Eligibility is one factor necessary before applying for a bursary in South Africa.

Often this will depend on what the organization/company is looking for in its bursar.

Before applying for a bursary in South Africa, an individual must:

  • have a strong academic history (some bursaries require good grades in certain subject – e.g. Maths/Science/Languages)
  • be studying or intend to study within a specific field of study suitable for the bursary program
  • be studying or you have applied to study at a recognized institution in South Africa
  • have a proven financial need (often by submitting proof of household income)

Note: Applicants must ensure they meet all the eligibility requirements to be considered for the Bursary.

How Do I Apply for a Bursary in South Africa?

The application process for a bursary in South Africa is simple and straight to the point. However, the process of applying can differ by the specific bursary.

Identifying the field of study is the next step, then you can begin completing the online bursary application forms.
