What is the Higher Education System in Nigeria Like?

Nigeria has the largest university system in Sub-Saharan Africa. It has over 48 state and federal universities with a total student enrollment of over 400, 000.

Basically, the Nigerian University system supports a large number of graduate programs. This serves as an attraction for students from neighboring countries especially African nations.

The system utilizes most of the nation’s research capacity and churns out more of its skilled and talented professional. The responsibility for quality and effective education and all its related matters falls on the shoulders of the Federal Ministry of Education.

However, the administration and supervision of the activities of the higher institutions in Nigeria is the responsibility of the National Universities Commission (NUC), a parastatal buffer body.

The general national entrance examination into the institution is prepared, coordinated, and conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board. They inform universities of applicant scores before the specific university entrance examination called Post Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (P-UTME) or popularly known as an Aptitude test.

This screening test plays a big role in determining whether the candidate is qualified for admission into a particular course or not.

In most cases, the applicant may be offered admission into a course other than his choice if he doesn’t meet the required scores in P-UTME. This is strictly based on the prerogative of the institution.

A financial institution known as the National Education Bank (formerly the Nigerian Student Loan Board) is charged with providing merit scholarships and student loans.

In practice, however, the university system developed less rationally than anticipated. According to the NUC survey, Enrolments in the federal universities (34% female, 59% in sciences) grew at a rapid rate of 12% annually during the 1990s and totaled 325,299 students by 2000. Enrolment growth rates were the highest in the South-South Region, followed by the North-East Region.

Which is Better in Nigeria? Public or Private Institutions.

Here in Nigeria, there are two categories of universities,

—Public Universities
—Private Universities

According to statistics by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, over 95% of Nigerian admission applicants choose a public higher institution as their choice with the Universities having a higher preference over polytechnics and colleges of education.

Research also shows that the highest portion of the application is for federal universities than state-owned universities.

The reason for such a lop-sided balance is not difficult to see. These reasons also account for why one should consider studying in Nigeria. There are a lot of benefits involved for students in federal Institutions than the state-owned institutions.

Rigorous Entry Process

No doubt, when seeking admission to a public university, you’re faced with a lot of competition, and difficult P-UTME. This, in turn, brings out the best in you as a student, because you’re in a position where it has now become survival of the fittest.

Compared to private universities where one can easily gain admission and probably makes a student become lazy. This makes public schools admit the best students.

Quality Academic Standards

In Nigeria, public schools have the best facilities for teaching, research, projects, and practicals. Most of these facilities and teaching methods may not be as modern and sophisticated as the developed nations; however, they have stood the test of time in the context of the Nigerian environment.

Acceptance of Certificates

This cannot be over-emphasized, a graduate of a public university will always stand a better chance against a private university graduate in the labor market because it is verified that public school students go through rigorous teaching and they sweat to get good grades and a good result. A graduate of UI will always stand a better chance against a graduate of Babcock.

Healthy Competition

In an average public university, where they are many students in a department, as a student, you’re faced with competition from your course mates, and you’re faced with having to pass that strict lecturer’s course.

This makes the students read regularly, read in the library, read at night, and even attend all lectures. In other terms, it builds you as a student, unlike in a private university where the students are few so the competition is not high and one can easily scale through.

Research

Most mind-blowing research is being conducted by public universities, research which leads to breakthrough in a particular problem ranging from the medical field to engineering and technology. We’ve read the news of ABU engineering students making drones, UBTH medical staff conducting kidney transplant, Unizik students making a minibus, and many others.

This can only be achieved through quality research and analysis and thesis, not just my classroom teaching. In the business field, the research could proffer solutions to Nigeria’s economic and financial problems and proffer economic pieces of advice too

Variety of Courses

In public universities, you have a huge bouquet of courses to choose from, whether in arts or science. It is noticeable that just a few private universities offer complex courses like Medicine and surgery, engineering, geology, radiography, and another pure practical-driven course.

Quality of Teachers

This is very obvious, as the public universities in Nigeria have a lot of highly qualified teachers who are well-trained at home and abroad. Most of them are professors, associate professors, MSc holders, and even Emeritus. This speaks volumes of the quality of education in public universities as compared with private universities.

There is not in any way meant to demean the private institutions which have their advantages and peculiarities. However, when subjected to comparison in terms of producing solid graduates who can fit perfectly into the system of the nation and the world at large, they stand no chance with public universities.

When you think of studying abroad, some of the best schools in the world like the Ivy League institutions like Princeton University, Yale University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology to the Oxbridge institutions of Oxford University, and Cambridge University are private schools. However, in the context of Nigeria, public schools remain the best options, as the experiences and longevity of the systems and course accreditation.
