SIERRA LEONE ARMY ON SPECIAL RECRUITMENT DRIVE FOR WOMEN
The Sierra Leone Army has launched a special recruitment drive geared towards boosting efforts towards attaining gender balance in the armed forces, APA learned on Monday.
It will enlist some 300 women into the force as part of the crusade that officials say is meant to mainstream the force and meet international commitments toward international peacekeeping efforts.
According to the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF), this is the first time the army will undertake such a special recruitment process in nearly 40 years.
In a statement, the army said the government and the International Security and Advisory Team (ISAT) support the initiative.
The first-ever all-female recruitment exercise and process was conducted in 1978 and 1979 once seventy-four females were Shortlisted for RSLAF.
Initially, 10 females were enlisted as CADETS in 1978, and 64 enlisted as recruits in 1979, the statement notes.
Brigadier General Peter Lavahun, Assistant Chief of Defence Staff Personnel and Military Secretary, who is also the Head of the RSLAF National Recruitment Team, was quoted in a statement by RSLAF saying that the special female recruitment drive was intended to raise the army’s profile in terms of gender mainstreaming.
“We are making assiduous efforts to resume active Peace Support Operations.
Currently, the United Nations policy on Peace Support Operations emphasizes fifteen percent of feminine participation in each peacekeeping force and that we have to be compelled to meet this standard”, aforesaid brigadier general Lavahun.
The upcoming recruitment process, which was just launched over the weekend by First Lady, Mrs. Fatima Bio, is slated to begin anytime from now, according to the army statement. It noted that potential recruits will be drawn from all the regions, districts, and chiefdoms anywhere in the country.
It said the launch was deliberately slated to coincide with the launch of the girl-child protection initiative of the office of the First Lady, dubbed “Hands off Our Girls”. RSLAF said it will disseminate details of the recruitment process through various communication channels, including its website, following the launch of the initiative.
women can now have the same chance as men do, including being enrolled in the army of Sierra Leone and making the gender balance a reality.
