Brief History of Eastern Michigan University

Eastern Michigan is a public research university located in Ypsilanti, Michigan, in the Detroit Area.

The university was founded in 1849. It opened its doors in 1853 as Michigan State Normal School. It is a large institution with an enrollment of over 11,428 undergraduate students.

An eight-member Board of Regents governs Eastern Michigan University. The governor appoints these Regents, and they, in turn, elect the university president.

EMU is classified among “R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity.

The undergraduate scholarships at Eastern Michigan University are for domestic and international students.

The freshman scholarships at Eastern Michigan University are:

1. Presidential Scholarship

This Presidential Scholarship at Eastern Michigan University requires students to apply for it.

The top 21 students in the application will receive a full-ride scholarship for a maximum of four years (or 124 credits).

To maintain the scholarship, students must enroll in 15 credits each semester, maintain a 3.5 GPA, meet SAP, and live in EMU’s residence halls all four years.  Also, have 1200+ SAT (critical reading and math)/25+ ACT (highest composite) for your application.

2. 4WARD Graduation Scholarship

This scholarship is available for incoming first-year students.

The 4WARD Graduation Scholarship offers a four-year graduation commitment.

It works this way: when you complete 2 years at Eastern Michigan University, we will fund your full tuition for your remaining two years. To initially qualify, you must have a minimum 3.0 high school GPA.

For the first two years, students will pay a locked-in tuition rate of approximately $13,500 per year (30 credits). Then EMU will pay for 100% of your next two consecutive years of tuition (30 credits a year).

Additionally, students will have to live in an on-campus community for all four years.

3. Emerald Scholarship

This scholarship is based on a high GPA and U.S. citizenship. It is renewable for four consecutive years if you meet the following criteria of enrolling in 12 hours each semester:

  • Award: $1,000–$7,500 per year
  • Eligibility: Based on cumulative high school GPA. Maintain a 2.0 EMU GPA, and meet SAP.
  • Consideration: Automatic. Awarded at the time of admission
  • Text your graduation year (i.e., 2024) to 467-467 and follow the prompts to receive a personalized scholarship estimate!

#4. Education First Opportunity Scholarship (EFOS)

This scholarship awards you $13,610 (Tuition minus Pell Grant = EFOS) for four years. Incoming first-year students admitted by February 1st who meet Pell Grant eligibility are considered for this award automatically.

To initially qualify, have a minimum 3.0 high school GPA.  To renew, be a full-time student, maintain a 2.75 EMU GPA, and meet SAP.

Remember to fill FASFA application each year by April 1st and remain Pell Grant eligible. 

SAP means Satisfactory Academic Progress. This means that the minimum passing grade for all credits is 67%. You mustn’t earn Grades of F, W, I, N, NC, or repeated classes.

1. King-Chavez-Parks Future Faculty Fellowship:

The KCP Future Faculty Fellowship provides a maximum award of $20,000 for Master-level fellows and $35,000 for Doctoral level fellows.

Students who wish to apply for the KCP future faculty fellowship need to submit the following:

  • Verification of Eligibility Criteria (see eligibility verification)
  • Personal Statement
  • Letters of Recommendation
  • The application will start on March 1

2. National Scholars Program

This scholarship is automatically awarded through your admissions application to your first master’s degree program and is only awarded to qualifying non-resident/international students.  Students who have enrolled for a master’s before are not eligible.

You should submit your graduate application on February 15 for fall or October 15 for winter to be considered for this scholarship.

This graduate award is renewable for up to two years. However, you need a 3.6 undergraduate GPA. Also, to receive payment, graduate students must enroll in at least eight credit hours each semester and maintain a 3.2 cumulative EMU GPA.

3. EMU Success Scholarship

The scholarship shares the same requirements with the National Scholars Program, which we have explained earlier.
