What are UCSD’s Requirements for Admission?
While many pieces go into a college application, you should focus on only a few critical things:
- GPA requirements
- Testing requirements, including SAT and ACT requirements
- Application requirements
- A minimum score of 83 is required for the TOEFL, or a minimum score of 7 is required for the IELTS for international students without English origin
What is UCSD Acceptance Rate?
If you want to get admission into UCSD the first thing to check is the acceptance rate. This will tell you how competitive the school is and how serious their qualifications are.
The acceptance rate at UCSD is 30.2%. For every 100 applicants, 31 are admitted to the school.
This means that the school is very selective. So, if you meet UCSD’s qualifications for GPA, SAT/ACT scores, and other parts of the application, you have a great chance of getting admission into the university.
Also, if you fall short on your GPA or your SAT/ACT scores, you’ll have a very low chance of being admitted, even if you meet the other admission necessities.

UCSD GPA Requirement
So many schools stipulate a minimum GPA requirement, but this is often just the bare minimum to submit an application without immediately getting rejected.
The GPA requirement that really matters is the GPA you need for a real chance of getting in. For this, we look at the school’s average GPA for its current students.
Most schools use a weighted GPA out of 4.0, though some report an unweighted GPA.
According to the school, the minimum GPA requirement is this:
- 3.0 with no grades lower than a C for California residents
- 3.4 with no grades lower than a C for non-California residents
However, in the last admission of 2024/2024, the accepted GPA range is between 4.07 – 4.28. Only 25% of the students had GPAs lower than this.
This does show that UCSD’s acceptance rate is around 4.08.
With a GPA of 4.08, UCSD needs you to be at the top of your class. You’ll require nearly straight A’s in all your classes to contend with other candidates. Furthermore, it would help if you were taking hard classes – AP or IB courses – to confirm that college-level academics is a breeze.
If you’re currently junior or senior, your GPA is hard to change in time for college applications. If your GPA is at or below the school average of 4.08, you’ll need a higher SAT or ACT score to recompense. This will help you contend efficiently against other aspirants who have higher GPAs than you.
Are there SAT and ACT Requirements?
Each school has diverse necessities for standardized testing. Most schools need the SAT or ACT, and many also need SAT subject tests.
You must take either the SAT or ACT to submit an application to UCSD. More importantly, you need to do well to have a strong application.
What are the UCSD SAT Requirements?
Several schools say that they have no SAT score cutoff, but the truth, still remains that there is a hidden SAT basis that is based on the school’s average score.
The average SAT score composite at UCSD is 1310 on the 1600 SAT scale. This score makes UCSD Reasonably Contentious for SAT-test scores.
UCSD SAT Score Analysis (New 1600 SAT)
The 25th percentile New SAT score is 1210, and the 75th percentile New SAT score is 1410. In other words, 1210 on the New SAT places you below average, while 1410 will move you up to above average.
What is SAT Score Choice Policy?
It is obvious that the Score Option policy at your school is an important part of your testing strategy. The UCSD has the Score Choice policy of “All Scores.” This means that the UCSD wants you to send all SAT scores you’ve ever taken to their office.
This may sound daunting, but the truth is most schools don’t actually consider all your scores evenly. For instance, if you scored 1300 on one test and 1500 on another, they won’t really average the two tests.
However, some students still worry about submitting too many test scores. They’re scared that UCSD will look down on too many efforts to boost your score. But the problem is, how many is too many?
From our research and discussion with admissions officers, we’ve got that 4-6 tests are a safe number to submit. The college understands that you require to have the best opportunity of admission, and sitting for the test again is a good way to do this. Within a moderate number of tests, they, however, don’t care how many times you’ve written the test. They’ll just concentrate on your score.
If you take the test more than 6 times, colleges begin questioning why you’re not developing with each test. They’ll doubt your study skills and ability to develop.
But below 6 tests, we greatly support retaking the test to maximize your opportunities. If your SAT score is currently below 1410, we strongly suggest that you think about prepping for the SAT and retaking it. You don’t have much to lose, and you can potentially raise your score and significantly boost your chances of getting in.
Are there UCSD ACT Requirements for Admission?
Just as it is for the SAT, UCSD doesn’t have a very high ACT cutoff, but if you score too low, your application will get thrown in the trash. However, the average ACT score at the UCSD is 29. This score makes UCSD Fairly Competitive for ACT scores.
Importantly, the 25th percentile ACT score is 27, and the 75th percentile ACT score is 33.
Even though UCSD says they have no least ACT basis, if you apply with a 27 or below, you’ll have a very difficult time getting admission into the school, unless you have something else very impressive in your application. There are so many aspirants that score 29 and above, a 27 will look academically weak.
What is ACT Score Sending Policy for UCSD Admission?
If you’re writing the ACT against the SAT, you have a huge advantage in sending scores, dramatically affecting your testing strategy.
When you send ACT scores to colleges, you have full control over which tests you send. You may choose to take 10 tests and only send your highest one. This is unlike the SAT, where many schools want you to send all your tests ever taken.
This means that you have more opportunities than you think to increase your ACT score. To try to aim for the school’s ACT basis of 33 and above, you should try to take the ACT as many times as possible. When you have the final score that you’re happy with, you can then send only that score to all your schools.
ACT Superscore Policy for UCDS Admission
Most schools take your best section scores from all the test dates you submit and then combine them into the best possible composite score. Thus, most schools will take your highest ACT score from a single sitting.
We weren’t able to find the school’s exact ACT policy, which most likely means that it does not Superscore. Regardless, you can choose your single best ACT score to send to UCSD, so you should prep until you reach our recommended target ACT score of 33.
What are the SAT/ACT Writing Section Requirements?
Both the SAT and ACT have an optional essay section. UCSD needs you to take the SAT Essay/ACT Writing section. They’ll use this as another factor in their acceptance deliberation.
SAT Subject Test Requirements
Schools differ in their SAT subject test specifications. Basically, competitive schools tend to expect them, while most schools in the country do not.
We did not find information that UCSD demands SAT subject tests, and so most likely, it does not. At least 6 months before applying, you should still double-check just to make sure, so you have enough time to take the test.
Detailed research into this school confirmed the following information.
You must have a 3.0 GPA (3.4 for non-residents) or higher and no grades lower than a C in the expected high school courses. Also, you can substitute SAT subject tests for courses.
If you don’t meet the qualifications, you can earn admission with a high enough score on the ACT/SAT plus on two SAT subject tests. Finally, very few students each year who don’t meet the above qualifications due to unusual conditions are given “admission by exception,” based on information presented in the personal statement.
Because this school is highly competitive, powerful academic grades are crucial to improving your odds of gaining admission. But if you can score a 1410 SAT or a 33 ACT or above, you will have a high possibility of getting in.
Also, if you apply with a score below a 1410 SAT or a 33 ACT, you sadly, have a low odds of getting in. There are too many other aspirants with high SAT/ACT scores and powerful applications, and you need to compete against them.
Is UCSD Accepting ACT/SAT Scores in Fall 2024?
UC San Diego currently plans to be test-optional for Fall 2024 admissions.
Under UC San Diego’s test-optional admissions policy, nobody will be required to submit an SAT or ACT score for admission consideration, and applications will not be viewed negatively based on the lack of a score.
Actually, this is in compliance with the COVID-safety precautions it vows to upkeep.
From our view, if you have the opportunity, by all means take the tests. They may be the boost that your applications needs.
What are the UCSD Coursework Requirements?
To be eligible for admission to UC San Diego, you must complete UC College preparatory courses (A-G courses) in the subjects below and earn a “C” grade or better.
You have to complete at least 11 of the 15 courses before your senior year of high school.

How Do I Get Into UCSD?
Here are a few steps on how to get admission into UCSD:
#1 Excel in your coursework and standardized tests.
You should aim at greatly exceeding the minimum requirements for GPA, test scores, and coursework. The most outstanding applicants will have scores at least in the 75% range and an above-average GPA for the admissions pool.
Additionally, you should take a curriculum with plenty of honors and AP or IB courses to demonstrate that you challenge yourself.
#2 Demonstrate that you are a person of strong character.
USCD defines personal characteristics as one of its standards for evaluation. Since teacher recommendations aren’t part of your application, you will be required to illustrate this independently. That means showing how your values align with those of USCD and highlighting your personal qualities as well as academics.
This can come through in your extracurricular activities, such as a commitment to community service beyond the advantage it will add to your application, and anecdotes in your application and essay, such as defining a time you stood up for the underdog or fought for what you know is right.
#3 Emphasize what sets you apart.
UCSD prides itself on its different student bodies. That doesn’t mean you must have a minority background to be accepted, but you should have some “hook” that makes you outstanding from the candidate pool.
Possibly you had an unusual upbringing. Maybe you speak multiple languages. Or you’re the first person in your family to attend college. Whatever it is, highlight what makes you different in your essay or other aspects of your application.

How do I Make My Application Stand Out?
Various circumstances influence your odds of admission to UCSD, but here are three steps to improve them.
- Place importance on areas like extracurricular successes and diverse and unusual circumstances. Your essays are an excellent place to do so.
- Pass minimum qualifications. UC system schools are unusual in that they state the established least qualifications for admissions. Use this information to your benefit. You should strive to beat them extensively, particularly if you’re out of state.
- Show your enthusiasm for UCSD. Of all the schools in the UC system—and all the universities in the country—why does UCSD appeal to you in particular? Like most schools, the UCSD admission committee wants to know why you want to go there in particular. USCD doesn’t have interviews, so you’ll need to demonstrate interest by visiting the college, getting on the mailing list for collateral, and signing up for online materials. You should also find ways of including the college’s values, which should equal your own, into your essays.
