EngineerGirl Essay Contest 

Every year, the EngineerGirl website sponsors the EngineerGirl Essay Contest for girls about technology, engineering, and its impact on the world. Primary school students (grades 3-5), middle school students, and high school students can participate in the competition.

To enter the competition, candidates are to write a story that celebrates engineering design and problem-solving. Winners in each category will receive a prize of $500, $250, and $100. All winners will be posted on the EngineerGirl website.

What is the EngineerGirl Essay Contest Eligibility?

Girls and boys can participate in the competition in the following three competition categories:

  • Elementary school students (grades 3-5)
  • Middle School students (grades 6-8)
  • High school students (grades 9-12)

The entry-level category must be based on American grade categories. Students who are not sure of their grades should choose a suitable category based on where the student is placed when attending a US public school.

Previous winners of the EngineerGirl Essay Contest who have received an EngineerGirl Cash Award in any of the above categories can not participate in the same age group.

Employees of the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine, as well as their immediate families or persons living in the same household as an employee of the National Academies, can not participate in this competition.

Participants can submit an application in one of the three contest categories. Participants must select a competition category at the time of registration. Each participant is limited to one submission.

The Essay Contest 2024 is open to elementary school, middle school, and high school students

The EngineerGirl website was launched in the USA in 2001. It aims to raise awareness throughout the country of the enormous opportunities engineering represents for girls and women.

Categories Requirements

Below is a table summarizing what contestants in each age category should submit. Be sure to check the complete rules and regulations for full details.

It is okay to work with others during the engineering design process. However, submissions must be the original work of an individual. Any evidence of plagiarism will immediately disqualify an entry.

How to Apply for Essay Contest

To enter the contest, applicants must write an original, fictional story in which the main character is a female who uses engineering skills to solve a problem.

However, there are three basic rules in writing the story:

  • Your main character must be female.
  • Your main character must use engineering design principles to solve a problem – she cannot rely on or use magic or supernatural powers.
  • The story must not exceed the word limit listed below for your grade level.
  • All stories must be original work. Any proof of plagiarism will immediately disqualify an entry.

Important Note: 

Applicants should spend time doing research to make sure that the story characters’ clothes, tools, and especially their actions are real.

Also, take time to learn about engineers and engineering as a better understanding of the engineering process, will bring about a better and more believable story.

Each contestant may include one, and only one, image or PDF document file to accompany his or her submission. Only .jpg or .pdf formats will be accepted.

Participants are also encouraged to include their submission information on one or more resources so that readers can go for more information.

When is EngineerGirl Essay Contest 2024 Application Deadline

However, the deadline for submissions for the Contest has closed. It closes on the 1st of February every year.
