About Rwanda
Rwanda is a landlocked East African country with a green, mountainous landscape. Its renowned Volcanoes National Park is home to mountain gorillas and golden monkeys.
The East African nation has over 44 tertiary education institutions, out of which 12 of them are public and 32 private.
The first university in Rwanda, the National University of Rwanda (NUR, now part of the University of Rwanda), was commissioned by the government in 1963 with 49 students. By the 1999–2000 academic year, the number rose to 4,550. Today this stands at 26,796, 39% of the female.
To support the higher education system, a ‘universités du Soir’ (night school university) was established to widen university access.
There are many scholarships for Rwandan students to support building a literate society. These study-abroad scholarships in Rwanda benefit students who can’t afford to study abroad due to a lack of finance.
