About Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Scheme

The CSS is a scholarship scheme that allows students from Developing Commonwealth countries who would not otherwise be able to study in the UK to benefit from graduate study at a University in the UK. This will help them to contribute to the development of their home countries.

Commonwealth Shared Scholarships are a joint initiative between the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (with funding from DFID) and UK universities to support scholarships for students from developing Commonwealth countries.

The Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP) is one of the world’s largest and most prestigious scholarship schemes for international study.

Since it was established in 1959, around 30,000 individuals, have benefited – 25,000 of them have held awards funded by the UK government, managed by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the United Kingdom (CSC). The Scholarships are offered annually for a Master’s study only.

What You Need To Know About Commonwealth Shared Scholarships 2023

The scholarships are for candidates from least developed and lower-middle-income Commonwealth countries for full-time Master’s study on selected courses, jointly supported by UK universities.

Funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID), Commonwealth Shared Scholarships enable talented and motivated individuals to gain the knowledge and skills required for sustainable development and are aimed at those who could not otherwise afford to study in the UK.

Level/Field of Study:

These Awards are for Master’s programs only. No awards will be made for undergraduate and doctoral studies or any other pre-sessional English language teaching. All courses undertaken must be demonstrably relevant to the candidate’s home country’s economic, social, or technological development.

The scholarship is eligible for courses that must fall within the following themes.

Eligible Nationality:

If you must apply for this scholarship, you must be a citizen of one of the Developing Commonwealth Countries listed below:

Bangladesh, Cameroon, Eswatini, The Gambia, Ghana, Guyana, India, Kenya, Kiribati

Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Rwanda, Samoa

Scholarship Worth:

Shared Scholarships are jointly funded by the CSC and participating in UK universities. Each Scholarship provides:

  • The CSC funds the cost of tuition fees (at the overseas rate), return airfares, and other allowances. Participating universities are required to support the student stipend for the award holder (at the rate set by the UK government).
  • Approved airfare from your home country to the UK and return at the end of your award (arranged by the university; funded by the CSC)
  • Approved tuition and examination fees (funded by the CSC)
  • Stipend (living allowance) at the rate of £1,043 per month, or £1,279 per month for those studying at universities in the London metropolitan area (rates quoted at 2017-2018 levels) (paid and funded by the university)
  • Warm clothing allowance (paid and funded by the university)
  • Study travel grant towards the costs of study-related travel within the UK or overseas (claimed from and paid by the university; funded by the CSC)
  • Excess baggage allowance, up to an annual approved limit, when returning home (claimed from and paid by the university; funded by the CSC)

Who is Eligible to Apply for Commonwealth Scholarship 2023:

To apply for the Commonwealth Shared Scholarship, candidates must:

  • Be a Commonwealth citizen, refugee, or British protected person
  • Be permanently resident in a developing Commonwealth country
  • Be available to start your academic studies in the UK by the start of the UK academic year in September/October.
  • By September, hold a first degree of either first or upper second class (2:1) classification, or lower second class (2:2) classification plus a relevant postgraduate qualification (usually a Master’s degree)
  • Not have studied or worked in a developed country for one (academic) year or more.
  • Be unable, either yourself or through your family, to pay to study in the UK

Sponsoring institutions must confirm that candidates are sufficiently fluent in written and oral English to pursue their proposed studies immediately, as no pre-course English Language Teaching is available under these awards.

How to Apply For commonwealth shared scholarship 2024 | Method of Application

  • You should apply to study an eligible Master’s course at a UK university participating in the Shared Scholarship scheme. These scholarships do not cover undergraduate courses, Ph.D. study, or any pre-sessional English language teaching and are usually tenable for one year only though they are fully funded scholarships.
  • And you must make your scholarship application using the CSC’s Electronic Application System (EAS).
  • Before applying, you must check with your UK university for their advice, rules, and application closing date.
  • You can apply for more than one course and to more than one university, but you may only accept one offer of a Shared Scholarship.
  • The CSC will not accept applications not submitted via the EAS to your UK university or directly from individuals.
