About Food Science Technology
Food science and technology can simply be defined as the study of food – from how it is made to the potential impacts that it has on our day-to-day existence.
The subject is fairly recent for studying at degree level, although the study of food and how to make it has been taught for hundreds of years.
The course educates students not only on the production of food, as was the case hundreds of years ago, but of the impact nutrition can have upon health and lifestyle.
Recently, there has been a significant shift in society’s attitudes toward food and nutrition. This is partly as a result of the high scale of obesity. Government bodies are now food and nutrition experts to promote a healthy lifestyle to future generations.
The entry requirements for a food science and technology course contrasts from university to university. However, most establishments offering a degree course will expect a minimum of 3 A-levels, or it’s equivalent, before granting you admission.
At the post-graduate level, students ought to have a strong degree and some work experience to support their application. They also must demonstrate a passion for the subject matter.
Majority of undergraduate Food Science and Technology courses have a study duration of 3 to 4 years, depending on whether or not students opt to do a work placement between the second and third stages of the degree programme.
Post-graduate qualifications mostly last for a minimum of one year.
