Higher Education Scholarships in Taiwan 2023

The Taiwan International Cooperation and Development Fund (Tain ICDF) offers a program of higher education scholarships for foreign students who want to study at Taiwan’s partner universities. International education and training have long been one of the main activities of the ICDF in Taiwan, among others.

Taiwan’s ICDF offers scholarships for higher education and has developed undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs. Programs in cooperation with recognized partner universities in Taiwan.

Value: This Taiwan scholarship is for Undergraduate program, each student receives NT $12,000 per month (US $144,000 per year) as an allowance for food and miscellaneous living expenses; for Master’s degree program, each student receives NT $15,000 per month (NT $180,000 per year) as an allowance for food and miscellaneous living expenses while for the Ph.D. program, each student receives NT $17,000 per month (NT $204,000 per year) as a grant for food and living expenses.

Level: Undergraduate, Masters, and Ph.D. programs.

Eligible Nationalities: Students from countries in the Asia Pacific, West Asia, Africa (Burkina Faso, Republic of Côte d’Ivoire, Nigeria, São Tomé and Príncipe, South Africa, Swaziland), Caribbean, Central America, from South America, from Europe can apply for this scholarship.

Taiwan Government Scholarships for International Students

The Taiwan Government, through the Ministry of Education, offers bachelor’s, masters and doctoral scholarships to international students wishing to study at Taiwan’s colleges and universities.

The program aims to encourage outstanding international students (excluding students from China, Hong Kong, and Macau) to pursue university studies in Taiwan to become familiar with the academic environment in Taiwan and to promote communication, understanding, and friendship between Taiwan and other countries of the world.

Value: The scholarship is worth NTD 40,000. There is also an allowance of NTD 15,000 for undergraduate students and NTD20,000 for postgraduate students.

Level/Field of Study: This Taiwan scholarship is for undergraduate, Masters, and Ph.D. students. The scholarships cover any of the courses offered by Taiwan Universities and Colleges.

Eligible Nationalities: Students from developing countries, African students, Asian students, South American students, and other international students.

Wenxin Master’s Scholarship for International Students at National Taiwan University 2023

The National Taiwan University (NTU) currently offers scholarships to international master’s students with outstanding academic prowess in the 2024 academic session.

The National Taiwan University has created this scholarship to foster academic research and boost exchanges with the international community by attracting international students to master’s degrees in academic excellence.

Value: Each Fellow will receive 250,000 TWD (tuition included) each year during their university registration, for a maximum of two years.

Level/Field of Study: Master’s students. The areas of studies are all courses offered by the National Taiwan University.

MOFA Taiwan Scholarship Programme

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Taiwan is accepting invitations for the Taiwan Scholarship Program. The MOFA Taiwan Scholarship continues to encourage students to continue their studies in Taiwan and deepen their understanding of Taiwan’s university environment.

Value: Scholars will receive a monthly stipend of $ 25,000 for the Language Enrichment Programme (LEP) and $ 30,000 for degree programs.

Recipients are responsible for all expenses, while in Taiwan. MOFA will not grant any other subsidy. However, MOFA will provide one-way and economy-class tickets to destinations for direct flights to and from Taiwan.

Level/Field of Study: Non-degree LEP, undergraduate, Master’s and doctoral degrees.

Research Grant for Foreign Scholars in Chinese Studies

The Center for Chinese Studies launched the research grant for foreign researchers in Chinese studies in July 1989. This grant sponsored foreign scholars from foreign Universities to come to Taiwanese universities to conduct research on Chinese studies.

Applicants must be foreign professors, associate professors, assistant professors (post-docs), doctoral students, or research fellows from academic institutions abroad. Their research in Taiwan should focus on the areas of Chinese and Taiwanese studies.

Value: For professors will NT $ 60,000, associate professors will get NT $ 50,000, assisting professors or doctoral students will receive NT $ 40,000 per month.

Also, a return ticket in economy class for the most direct route to Taiwan from the country of residence of the recipient. The duration of the scholarship is three to twelve months.

NPUST Undergraduate Scholarships for Excellent Foreign Students in Taiwan

National Pingtung University of Science and Technology (NPUST) offers the scholarship to international students to study in Taiwan. These guidelines are promulgated to encourage outstanding international students to study at NPUST and help them live on campus without difficulty and complete their studies successfully.

All foreign students currently studying at or applying for enrollment in NPUST are qualified. Those who are receiving the scholarship(s) from other sources are not eligible. Scholarships will be awarded each year. Renewal applications will be evaluated based on the academic performance of the student.

Value: For undergraduate students, assigned items include a partial or full scholarship and various miscellaneous fees, and free accommodation in NPUST student residences.

For Graduate Student Awards, Partial or total scholarship, exemption from miscellaneous fees and credits (students receive grants from the actual credits taken each semester. The maximum number of subsidized credits each semester are twelve), and free accommodation in NPUST student residences.

Level: Undergraduate and graduate students

Eligible Nationalities: This Taiwan scholarship is for foreign students.

Application Deadline: For new foreign students, the application must be submitted along with the application for admission to NPUST by April 30 for the following academic year. For currently enrolled foreign students (including renewal applicants), applications must be
submitted between July 20 and August 5 for the following academic year.

Ph.D. Research Assistantship Scholarship

The Ph.D. Assistantship scholarship is issued by the National Pingtung University of Science and Technology in conjunction with the Ministry of Education to attract foreign students to study in Taiwan.

Value: Tuition waiver Stipend of at least TWD 14,000 per month (TWD 8,000 from school; TWD 6,000 from advisor). Once awarded, the assistantship is valid for up to 4 years.

Living expenses in NPUST (subjected to change without further notification), on-campus: TWD 7,429 per semester (including wifi), off-campus: TWD 3,000/month ~ 20,000/6 months and feeding allowance, TWD 50 ~ 100 per meal.

MOE Huayu Enrichment Scholarship

The Ministry of Education created the Huayu Enrichment Scholarship (MOE HES) to strengthen exchanges between the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the countries designated by the Ministry of Education by encouraging foreign students to study Mandarin in Taiwan and deepen their understanding of Taiwanese society, cultural and social developments.

Value: This Taiwan scholarship is a monthly subsidy of NT $ 25,000. Its duration is two months (summer school), three months, six months, nine months, or twelve months.

Level/Field of Study: Undergraduate students.

Eligible Nationalities: Students from Africa and other foreign international students with the exception of Taiwanese students.

Academia Sinica Taiwan International Graduate Program

In order to keep up with the rapid development of science and technology and to promote the internationalization of higher education in Taiwan, Academia Sinica set up the Taiwan Advanced Training Program (TIGP) in 2002 in collaboration with a consortium of national universities key research.

TIGP‘s interdisciplinary doctoral programs are designed to provide an ideal scientific research environment and research environment for those wishing to conduct advanced research and gain experience in mature international academic environments.

Taiwan Foundation for Democracy’s Fellowships

The Taiwan Foundation for Democracy (TFD) has established scholarships to strengthen exchanges and cooperation between Taiwanese and foreign non-governmental organizations involved in the development of democracy and human rights in Taiwan, encouraging independent studies in Taiwan.

Value: This Taiwan scholarship will be evaluated and approved by the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy. One round-trip economy-class flight ticket to Taiwan is also available.

Grants from the Chiang Ching-Kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange

Through this scholarship program, the Chiang Ching-Kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange aims to encourage and help foreign academic institutions and students to study Chinese culture, promote exchanges and cooperation between academic institutions and universities, Taiwanese foreigners, and deepen the understanding of the international community regarding Taiwanese society and culture.

MOE Short Term Research Award

The award was created by the Ministry of Education to encourage foreign citizens (excluding mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macao) to conduct short-term research in Taiwan, in the United States.

Its objective is to improve their understanding of Taiwanese culture and society and to promote exchanges and cooperation between Taiwan and other countries.

Value: Ph.D. Candidates will receive a monthly research allowance of NT$25,000 and Post Doctoral Fellows will receive a monthly research allowance of NT$40,000. One round-trip, economy-class ticket for the most direct route to Taiwan (The maximum subsidized amount is determined by the MOE).

Level/Field of Study: This Taiwan scholarship is for Ph.D. students. The topics for research should be related to Taiwan’s humanities, social sciences, culture, arts and relevant comparative research (excluding areas relating to science, medicine, engineering, and relevant comparative studies).

ACYA Mandarin Training Center Scholarships

The ACYA is offering three scholarships to the National Taiwan Normal University Mandarin Training Centre (NTNU MTC) during the winter semester. Foreign students are eligible for this scholarship program. The MTC scholarship program aims to encourage foreign students to continue their Chinese studies in Taiwan and increase the flow of international culture.

Taiwan 4-Year Medical School Scholarships for International Students

The Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) is pleased to offer the I-Shou University School of Medicine scholarship program. This is a full scholarship program for bachelor degree holders; applicants must have a bachelor’s degree to apply.

Level/Field of Study: Master’s degree program in the field of medicine.

Distinguished International Graduate Student (DIGS) Scholarship- Master Degree

For master’s students, the maximum scholarship granted is the waiver from tuition and the incidental fees for a period of two years.

The evaluation will be conducted each year by the student’s department and the research advisor to determine the student’s grade for the following year based on his or her academic performance.

The maximum amount of the scholarship for Ph.D. students is fully funded tuition fees, incidental fee and accommodation fees on campus for four years.

The evaluation will be conducted annually by the student’s department and the research advisor to determine the student’s grade for the following year based on academic performance and/or service.

Graduate students may also receive additional scholarships from their academic department or advisors, on a case-by-case basis.
