Georgetown University, a private university in Washington DC, is the oldest Catholic and Jesuit higher education institution in the US. Its alumni include two former US presidents: Bill Clinton and Lyndon Johnson; as well as several other heads of state, including King Felipe VI of Spain.
Having been founded in 1789 by John Carroll, the US’ first bishop, and archbishop, on a hilltop overlooking the Potomac River, Georgetown awarded its first bachelor’s degrees in 1817.
The American Civil War nearly forced the closure of the university, with the student body dropping from 313 to 17 between 1859 and 1861, but it was in the aftermath of the conflict that Georgetown became the institution that is known today.
Patrick Healy, the university’s president between 1873 and 1882 and the first African American to earn a Ph.D., reshaped the institution’s curriculum to place a focus on history and the natural sciences and started the construction of Healy Hall, the flagship Flemish Romanesque building at the heart of the campus.
Nowadays, the university is divided into nine undergraduate and graduate schools, including Georgetown College, which offers a liberal arts program, and the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service, which has educated heads of state and politicians from around the world.
With more than 7,000 undergraduate and about 10,000 postgraduate students, about 11 percent of Georgetown’s students are from overseas, being drawn from about 130 countries.
Although it has always been independent of the Catholic Church, Georgetown’s Jesuit heritage continues to be influential, with education at the university emphasizing service to others, particularly the vulnerable and disadvantaged.
Georgetown also runs a school of Foreign Service in Doha, Qatar, and offers study abroad opportunities at villas around the Mediterranean.
Alumni and sports teams of Georgetown are known as Hoyas. Prominent Hoyas include US defense secretary Robert Gates and his predecessor Donald Rumsfeld; José Manuel Barroso, the former president of the European Commission; and King Abdullah II of Jordan. Actor Bradley Cooper is another Georgetown alumnus.

- Applicable programs: All Master of Professional Studies (MPS) programs, Executive Master of Professional Studies (EMPS) programs, and Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies (BALS) and Master of Arts in Liberal Studies (MALS) programs.
- Discount amount: Former Jesuit Volunteer Corps and Jesuit Volunteer Corps Northwest members are eligible for a 15% tuition discount during each semester in which they are registered for classes. City Year Alumni University Partnership

In keeping with Georgetown’s Catholic and Jesuit heritage and informed by our commitment to living as women and men in service to others, we honor those who have served for at least one (1) year with City Year by applying a tuition discount to eligible students.
- Applicable programs: All Master of Professional Studies (MPS) programs, Executive Master of Professional Studies (EMPS) programs, and Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies (BALS) and Master of Arts in Liberal Studies (MALS) programs.
- Discount amount: Former City Year volunteers are eligible for a 15% tuition discount during each semester in which they are registered for classes. Additionally, one student is eligible for a 25% discount during each semester in which they are registered for classes. World Bank Group Staff Association Scholarship
World Bank Staff Association Members accepted to Master of Professional Studies degree, and Executive Master of Professional Studies degree programs at Georgetown SCS are eligible for a tuition discount during each semester in which they are registered for classes.
- Applicable programs: All Master of Professional Studies (MPS) programs, Executive Master of Professional Studies (EMPS) programs, and Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies (BALS) and Master of Arts in Liberal Studies (MALS) programs.
- Discount Amount: Current World Bank Staff Association members are eligible for a 10% tuition discount during each semester in which they are registered for classes.
- Student Requirements: In order to receive the tuition discount, students must submit a letter at the beginning of each term from the World Bank Staff Association certifying that they student is still an employee of the World Bank and members of the World Bank Staff Association in good standing. This letter is due within two weeks of registration for classes each term and must be attached in an email to scsscholarships@georgetown.edu

LaFarge BALS Scholarship
The LaFarge Scholarship awards three scholarships per academic year: One to a student who studied at Montgomery College, one to a student who studied at Northern Virginia Community College, and one to a student who studied at Prince George’s Community College.
The two LaFarge Scholarships provide each recipient with a 50 percent reduction in tuition costs for the duration of the student’s time as a degree-seeking student in the Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies program, as long as the student maintains a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 in Georgetown courses.
The Rev. John LaFarge Jr, SJ, was an American Jesuit priest. For decades, he served as an editor and writer for the Jesuit magazine America. He was noted for his efforts to promote racial tolerance.

Osher Reentry BALS Scholarship
The Osher Reentry Scholarship awards up to $5,000 per student per academic year and is dedicated to both newly admitted and current students in the Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies program.
- Osher Reentry Scholarships are aimed at students who:
- Have experienced a cumulative gap in education of five or more years.
- Anticipate workforce participation for a significant period of time after graduation.
- Demonstrate financial need.
- Show academic promise and a commitment to graduating with a degree.
The Osher Reentry Scholarship program is made possible by the Bernard Osher Foundation, headquartered in San Francisco and founded in 1977 by Bernard Osher, a respected businessman and community leader. The foundation seeks to improve the quality of life through support for higher education and the arts. The foundation provides post-secondary scholarship funding to colleges and universities across the nation, with special attention to reentry students.
D.C. Mayor’s Scholars Undergraduate BALS Scholarship
The Mayor’s Scholars Undergraduate Program provides need-based funding for eligible DC residents earning their first associate’s or bachelor’s degree at select area colleges and universities. Recipients of Mayor’s Scholars funding can receive up to $4,000 per academic year for up to four years for an associate’s degree and up to six years for a bachelor’s degree.
The funds are available first come, first, serve, and applicants must re-apply each year. There is no guarantee applicants will receive funding, as funds are only available until they run out.

Crankstart Foundation Re-entry BALS Scholarship
The Crankstart Foundation Re-entry Scholarship awards up to $5,000 per student per academic year and is dedicated to both newly admitted and current students in the Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies program.

The Crankstart Foundation is the charitable enterprise of Michael Moritz and Harriet Heyman. The couple’s philanthropy in the California Bay Area is mainly focused on education, and arts and culture, but support has also gone to parks and human services. The Crankstart Foundation Re-entry Scholarship is made possible only by the generosity of Mr. Moritz and Mrs. Heyman.
Phi Theta Kappa Bridge BALS Scholarship
The Phi Theta Kappa Bridge Scholarship is awarded to one student each year entering the Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies program at Georgetown University.
The scholarship grants the student a 50 percent reduction in Georgetown tuition costs for the duration of the student’s time as a degree-seeking student in the Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies program, as long as the student maintains a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 in Georgetown courses.
PTK Bridge Scholarship honors students who:
- Are a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society
- Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher
- Have completed at least 35 credits from their two-year institution
- Demonstrate academic excellence and financial need
Executive Certificate in Transformational Leadership Scholarship Fund
The Executive Certificate in Transformational Leadership Scholarship Fund allows Georgetown University to further the mission of the Institute for Transformational Leadership (ITL) to develop leaders who will create a more sustainable and compassionate future.
The scholarship will be awarded to student leaders who best exemplify Georgetown’s Jesuit values of Women and Men for Others and the Community in Diversity through their work in social justice and diversity and inclusion.
Applicable Program: Executive Certificate in Transformational Leadership
Scholarship Amount: Tuition scholarships will be awarded up to $5,000.
Student Requirements (factors which may be considered in a holistic review process include the student’s):
- Professional experience and goals
- Academic background
- Leadership journey and path
- Work and commitment towards social justice and diversity and inclusion
How to Apply:
Applicants can apply for the scholarship by uploading an additional essay to their application for the Executive Certificate in Transformational Leadership program. The essay (~1000 words) must address the following questions:
- In your professional work, how are you striving for social justice and to increase diversity and inclusion?
- How will this scholarship, if awarded, make a difference in your leadership development and your professional work?
Christopher H. Collins Opportunity Scholarship
One Christopher H. Collins Opportunity Scholarship will support a student to attend the MPS in Real Estate program. The student will be in need of financial resources, reside in the District of Columbia, and have a background or experiences that, when evaluated holistically, suggest they are uniquely able to contribute to the diversity of the Georgetown community.
Factors that may be considered include the student’s socioeconomic, cultural and/or family background, personal experiences and challenges, and/or demonstrated ability to develop and support diversity and cultural understanding.
- Applicable program: Master of Professional Studies (MPS) in Real Estate.
- Discount Amount: The District of Columbia Building Association (DCBIA) will fund one scholarship to cover 100 percent of the cost of tuition needed to complete the MPS in Real Estate program.
- Student Requirements: Applicants must be new students starting in the fall 2024 semesters. Factors that may be considered include the student’s socioeconomic, cultural, and/or family background, personal experiences and challenges, and/or demonstrated ability to develop and support diversity and cultural understanding. Please note that financial need is just one aspect of consideration.
The selected Christopher H. Collins Opportunity Scholarship recipient must remain in good academic standing according to the standards set by the MPS in Real Estate academic program and the Office of Academic Affairs and Compliance for the duration of the program in order to continue receiving the scholarship.
Scholarship essays and completed admissions packages must be received by July 15, 2024, in order to be considered for the scholarship. One winner will be selected by August 1, 2024.
Applicants must also submit a FAFSA by the July 15, 2024 deadline in order to be considered for this scholarship.
How to Apply
In order to be considered for the Christopher H. Collins Opportunity Scholarship, applicants must submit a 300-word essay on the following topic. Completed essays should be sent as a Word document to scsscholarships@georgetown.edu.

First-Year Application for Fall 2023
We encourage you to begin your application process as soon as possible so we may open your admissions file and track any documents sent in support of your application.

GEORGETOWN APPLICATION SUBMISSION
Step One – Take a few moments to fill out and submit the Georgetown Application. This should only take you ten to fifteen minutes. Please submit this form as soon as possible so that they can create your official admissions file.
After that, they will track and connect any documents or standardized testing sent in support of your application. The Application also initiates the alumni interview process.
Immediately after submitting the Georgetown Application, you should complete Steps Two and Three. In Step Three, submission of the Application Supplement need not be completed until the application deadline.
Step Two – Within 24 hours of submitting the Georgetown Application, you will receive an email with instructions on how to create your application account.
Once your account has been created, you will be able to complete and submit your Georgetown Application Supplement and send email requests to your College Counselor and Teacher(s) regarding your required recommendations.
Step Three – Once you login to your application account, please click on the link to continue your application for the upcoming academic year. Please read the instruction page entirely and then proceed to the recommendation request form.
Please note that the recommendation form requires the email addresses of your high school counselor and recommending teacher(s) so that an email requesting your supporting documents will be sent to them automatically. Please complete this section as soon as you have secured the correct contact information for your recommenders.
If for some reason you are unable to obtain or provide the email addresses, please contact the admissions office and we will be happy to provide additional guidance. The remaining pages of the supplement can be completed over time and are due no later than your application deadline.

Other forms of art portfolios, such as photographs of artwork or original artwork, will not be accepted if not produced on a CD. The CD should be submitted in a protective case to the Admissions Office with a label indicating the student’s name.

Georgetown University Campus
Georgetown University is situated overlooking the Potomac River, just a few minutes from downtown Washington.
There are numerous traditional residence halls, and freshmen, sophomores, and juniors are required to live on campus. Other students choose to live in the townhouses and apartments surrounding the campus.
Student organizations on campus include religious groups, media outlets, and student government.
