Chesapeake, founded in 1963, is the result of a merger of historic Norfolk County and the city of South Norfolk. Three aldermen were elected in Norfolk County in 1798 to carry out the provisions of a Thomas Jefferson educational bill, and the first superintendent of schools, Reverend Thomas Hume, was appointed in 1850.

Chesapeake Public Schools provides a wide range of fully online courses to all students enrolled in the school division. Online learning supports their strategic goals of empowering teachers to connect with students across the division and increasing student engagement and choice. Beginning in the fall of 2020, the division provided blended and fully online learning opportunities to all students through the Schoology Learning Management System (LMS). This LMS will assist teachers in providing students with personalized learning experiences.
