ENTRY
The following procedures, based on the Code of Virginia, regulate the age of entry for students at Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS):
A child who is five years old may enroll in Kindergarten during the school year. Children who do not meet the age requirement for kindergarten will not be enrolled in kindergarten or assessed for a kindergarten place at PWCS.
Exceptionally, a child whose fifth birthday is after school resumes may not apply. children of parents in active service in the military (active duty means full-time service status OR active uniformed service in the United States, including members of the National Guard and Reserve with active duty orders under 10 USC Sections 1209 and 1211) who move to Virginia have provisions that are covered by the intergovernmental military pact. This intergovernmental military pact provision applies only to students from active military families transferring to Virginia from an offshore Local Education Agency (LEA).
Children of parents in active military service are enrolled in kindergarten even if the child was out of school, but the child would attend kindergarten in an out-of-state LEA if the military family had not moved.
Children of parents in active military service can continue their enrollment in the grade level if the admission status of their grade level (including kindergarten) corresponds to an LEA in the sending state at the time of the relocation of the military family, regardless of the minimum age requirement. A pupil who has completed the required grade in the LEA in his home country can enroll in the next higher grade in the host country regardless of the minimum age. The host state enters the school in the host state at the validated level of an LEA in the sending state.
Once a student is officially enrolled in kindergarten, the student is expected to attend school regularly, except for normally excused absences.
