Whether you are a golf enthusiast or love to be part of the best college golf programs, this article is for you. However, before you proceed to read about the top 15 best college golf programs of all time, there are a few things you need to understand about the game.

What You Need to Know About Golf

Historians agree that Scotland was the first to play the game in the fifteenth century. However, the ancient history of golf remains uncertain. Other historians believe that the game originated in ancient Rome from the paganica game.

The game consists of players using a stick to hit a stuffed leather ball. The stick is usually curved. According to one theory, as Rome conquered the world, they spread the game alongside other things. In the first century B.C, the game saw some modifications and became a modern game.

According to other scholars, the game came from the Chinese chuiwan, which means to strike a ball.

The chuiwan was popular from the eighth down to the fourteenth century According to the “Autumn Banquet,” by Youqui in 1368 depicts a Chinese imperial court member swinging what resembles a golf club at a tiny ball with the hope of pushing it into the hole.

However, others believe that the game was introduced to them in Europe in the Middle Ages.

Another game looks like the golf game that was prominent in England. The game was known as a chambot in France and Cambuca in England, and Kolven in London, Netherlands, from 1297 in commemoration of the assassin of the Floris V incident a year ago.

It is most likely that modern golf began in Scotland. There is a written record of king James the second banning the game in 1457 when he called it a distraction to archery training. In 1502, the ban was lifted by king James IV when he fell in love with the game. The first golf clubs started from 1503 to 1504. Many Golfers consider the Old Course at St. Andrews a pilgrimage site.

The standard 18-hole links course was built in 1764 at St. Andrews when Golfers modified the game from 22 to 18-hole. The game of golf was already popular in Mussel burgh Links, East Lothian, Scotland, as early as 2 March 1672. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Mussel burgh Links is the oldest golf course in the world today.

The oldest rules of the game that survived till now were compiled in 1744 for The Honorable Company of Edinburgh Golfers (formerly Company of Gentlemen Golfers), at Leith, Scotland.

The first oldest golf tournament is the Open Championship, held on 17/10/1860, at Prestwick Golf Club in Ayrshire, Scotland. It is also the first golf major and is still in existence. Scottish golfers were the earliest winners of golf majors. In the United States, two Scottish (Robert Lockhart and John Reid) men were the first to demonstrate golf by setting up a hole in an orchard in 1888. In the same year, Reid set up the Saint Andrew’s Golf Club in Yonkers, NY, United States.

How Do You Play The Game Of Golf?

College golf courses follow the same rules as your typical golf game. It consists of different rounds. Each round requires players to play several holes, usually eighteen in a particular order. The course layout determines the holes. There are no strict rules to the number of people playing the game.

However, a group playing the game will have one to four people in a round. The duration required for an 18-hole round play is four hours max. Golfers can also play a 9-hole round for two hours.

To play a hole, the ball will be put into play by striking the ball with a club on the teeing ground (tee box or tee). Golfers may use tees for their first strike. However, it is also not compulsory.

A tee is a small peg that players use to raise the ball a few centimeters above the ground before striking. The most popular tees consist of wooden materials. Nonetheless, tees can also consist of other materials like plastic and metals.

Before the tee, mounds of sand served the purpose of elevating the ball, and cans of sand were made available. Today, some courses still require the use of sand to lift the ball to minimize damage to teeing ground. It also helps to reduce the litter of tees.

For better distance and shot accuracy, tees are essential. It helps reduce the interference of grass and the ground with the club. In golf, an initial shot that covers over 225 yards is called a drive.

You make it with a driver, a club with a long shaft, and a large wooden head. For shorter holes, there are other types of clubs available. They consist of both wood and iron. During play, the golfer aims to sink the putt with as less strokes as possible.

Also, the game has obstacles/hazards like ponds or streams, rough (grass areas), bunkers or sand traps, and doglegs. In stroke play, the competition follows strict playing rules. Every player continues to play until they sink a putt, no matter how many shots it requires.

In match play, the player can pick up his ball and surrender the hole in cases where the player has made enough holes without any practical possibility of winning the game.

It is also informally accepted for a player to surrender the hole after hitting a triple bogey. The practice serves as a courtesy to others and speeds up play. It also helps to prevent runaway scores and reduce injuries due to frustration and overexertion.

What are the Rules of Golf?

The United States Golf Association (USGA) keeps a collection of rules for the game. While it is not compulsory, it is essential to recognize your original ball on the first tee. Also, to save time and speed up the game pace, golfers play ready golf. Some of the essential rules of golf from the USGA are:

  • Bunker rules
  • Cart path relief
  • The correct signing of your scorecard
  • Don’t give or ask for advice
  • Finish the hole with your ball
  • Hit a provisional ball
  • Lateral hazards (red stake)
  • Lost ball rule
  • Mark your ball
  • No practice between holes
  • Out of bounds (attracts a two-shot penalty)
  • Play behind the Tee markers
  • Play the ball as it lies
  • Playing it from the water
  • The 14-club rule. Breaking this rule will attract a two-stroke penalty or lead to disqualification
  • Understanding hazards
  • Unplayable lies
  • Water hazard (yellow stakes)
  • Whiff the golf ball

In 2019, golf rules saw some changes. The changes to the golf rules include:

  • Flagstick can stay in when you are on the putting green
  • Ground club in a hazard
  • Rule 3-3
  • Take drops at knee height
  • Three are minutes rule to look for your ball

What are the Different College Golf Courses Available?

While there are different golf courses available, here are the five golf courses you should experience in a lifetime.

  • Desert courses—are prominent in the Middle East and Southwest America regions. They have grass only in the fairway, the tee box, and the green.
  • Par 3 Courses—consists only of par 3s and is best for beginners working on their short game. It’s a course that anybody can play and enjoy.
  • Parkland courses—more prominent in the United States, these courses are designed inland.
  • The championship courses—are built for the specific purpose of hosting different golf tournaments. While there are no straight-cut standards for championship courses, TPC Sawgrass is often referred to as a championship course because it regularly hosts PGA Tour events.
  • The links to courses—are not common to find. You can only find them in England, Ireland, and Scotland, where golf originated. Link courses have a few trees on the fairway, making it easy for the wind to interfere with tactics. They also have small, deep foxholes instead of wide-open bunkers, which makes it more challenging.
